How I Healed More Than a Decade of Back Pain

Meet Dr. Ryan Peebles, DPT

I was ashamed, embarrassed, and angry. I had done everything to take care of my back, and yet I was broken.

Back problems cast a shadow over my life for a decade. That time was painful, but it was also a journey of growth, where I developed an ever-evolving, deepening understanding of the body, which I will share with you.

It all started when lower back pain side-lined me from playing basketball as a junior in high school. I couldn’t lift weights anymore. And I couldn’t pursue my passion of surfing because I felt nerve damage every time I went.

“I have a bad back.” ....I hated those words.

I didn’t really talk about it. Don’t get me wrong, my friends and family all knew, and at times treated me like I was disabled, but it went largely unspoken. It was too much of a drastic change from who I once was.

No. It wasn’t drastic. Worse, it was gradual. When people asked me what happened, I didn’t have a specific injury I could blame. I just… had a bad back. That was my normal. The back problems became serious in my early 20s.

It’s funny, every new physical therapist I saw over all those years said the same thing.
“You’re way too young for this.”

What did my future look like? I had one chiropractor tell me, after looking at my x-ray, that I would be in a wheelchair by the time I was 30. Imagine how that affected my psyche. That same chiro then cracked my back so hard that, from then on, I could feel the shifting of an instability every time I took a step. My back was really messed up after that, and I felt hopeless.

I suffered from depression, anxiety, and fear. And then, impossibly, things got worse.

My physical therapist once told me, "If you can just hold off getting surgery for 5 more years, the technology should be much better by then.

Other people were practically begging me to get surgery. I had tried everything else...

PT, chiro, acupuncture, yoga, pilates, inversion, lots of pills and injections, myofascial, craniosacral, Rolfing, Alexander, Mackenzie & Egoscue methods. Even Chinese medicine. You name it, I tried it!

Despite all my efforts, I felt like my body was falling apart.

One day in 2010, I was curled up on my bedroom floor dwelling on my pain. It was my usual spot, but this time was different. Not only did I have my normal lower back pain, but both my knees hurt too. I also had neck pain, I could feel that my jaw was jutting forward, and my bite was even messed up!

This wasn't just a back problem. My whole body was going haywire.

In that moment I knew… I would either have to accept my wheelchair-bound fate, or take responsibility in my own hands and become my own healer. So when I was 24 years old, I committed my life to healing my back so I could get back to my passion of surfing.

I was determined to understand the cause, and find a permanent solution.

In the following years I became obsessed with research, consuming countless books and articles online. Eventually, I identified muscle imbalances as the cause of my back problem. This whole body concept resonated with me. It connected the dots and gave me an explanation for many of my body problems, like my laundry list of other injuries. It was a way to look at chronic injuries from a full body perspective.

I knew I finally understood the root cause of my back pain.

My own body became the test pilot for learning how to reverse it. I continually implemented what I was learning into my personal exercise program, with the goal of restoring my body’s muscular balance. I was far from where I wanted to be, and still in pain, but starting to see positive results.

I needed a deeper understanding and more tools.

So I decided to get my doctorate in physical therapy. PT school was a very zoomed in approach, focused on individual joints. It was hard to see the whole picture, so I started applying the whole body concepts I already understood to what we were learning. In 2015, I graduated from PT school with ‘High Honors’ to become Dr. Ryan Peebles, DPT.

I’ve now worked in rehab facilities, outpatient clinics, sports clinics, with Olympic athletes, geriatrics, a professional sports team, and even in a hospital. Wherever I go, I see lower back pain, and a predictable pattern of muscle imbalances lurking underneath the surface.

Throughout all my experiences, everything has pointed towards one simple thing...

In order to bring the body back into balance, you have to start with the core. And when I began taking this approach with my own body, it was pivotal in allowing me to finally climb out of what I call the "back pain spiral".

By continually adapting my personal routine as I learned, I found a process that gets to the "core" of the problem. Piece by piece, I created this unique program that teaches you how to retrain your body for healthy movement, so you can get out of pain for good.

The Core Balance Training program now helps thousands of people a year to climb out of the back pain spiral, and get their lives back. We're making a real difference, and have received an overwhelming number of success stories.
